India’s Waterproofing Industry Fast-Tracks Toward ₹15,000 Crore Market by 2026

Waterproofers Association of India (WAI) hosts the 2nd International Expo in New Delhi, spotlighting climate-resilient engineering and global partnerships. "The specialised waterproofing industry in India has already reached a market size of ₹15,000 crore and is fast-tracking to cross the $2 billion milestone," said Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Former Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Government of India, and Former Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, while inaugurating the second edition of the India International Waterproofers Conference & Expo 2026.

Organised by the Waterproofers Association of India (WAI), the flagship two-day summit featured over 20 industry speakers, five focused panel discussions, and an expansive exhibition with 53 specialised live-demonstration booths. "As we progress towards the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, our construction technology sector must aggressively catch up with frontline manufacturing segments," Mishra said. "We can no longer design structures with a lifespan of just 10 to 20 years. Our infrastructure must be built to last for 100 years. By learning from our rich architectural heritage, where temples and historic monuments have stood strong for over a thousand years, we must move away from prioritising low initial material costs and instead focus on long-term structural sustainability across the entire lifecycle."

Sandeep Chaudhry, President of WAI and Founder of SNP Technologies Pvt. Ltd. and DryShield Waterproofing, reflected on the journey of building an organised national technical fraternity. "Waterproofing functions as the silent protector of all building systems and public infrastructure, yet it remains one of the most overlooked and under-budgeted aspects of construction," Chaudhry said. "Real estate projects often spend crores on premium interiors and architectural aesthetics, while leaving the structural envelope vulnerable to moisture ingress. WAI was established to change this mindset. We do not sell products; we deliver engineering confidence through technical skill certification, applicator training, and robust specification standards to help build a leak-free India."

Hu Xibao, Chairman of the China Building Waterproof Association (CWA), highlighted China's $16 billion waterproofing industry and extended a strategic invitation to Indian companies for cross-border collaboration. "India is entering a golden era of accelerated urban development," Hu said. "Chinese partners are ready to provide smart, automated execution tools specifically designed for India's high-temperature conditions and to improve on-site efficiency."

The summit, which brought together 55 international delegates from China, Korea, Germany, the UAE, and other countries, highlighted a significant shift in India's construction and real estate sectors—from low-cost, ad hoc waterproofing practices to sophisticated, climate-resilient engineering solutions. The event also underscored the rapid growth of India's building chemicals industry.

Reinforcing the conference's technical focus, Prof. Mahesh Tandon, Chairman of Tandon Consultants Pvt. Ltd., emphasised the importance of engineering expertise over excessive dependence on automation.

"Our historical engineers did not have access to modern high-speed computing, yet they possessed exceptional engineering judgment," he said. "Successfully addressing severe hydrostatic pressure in modern high-rise basements and complex transit tunnels requires a deep understanding of water behaviour in concrete structures rather than over-reliance on automated specifications."

A technical presentation by Mehul Parikh, Advisor to Pidilite Industries and Principal Consultant at EnvaDure, highlighted the growing impact of changing weather patterns on modern building envelopes.

"We are constructing 21st-century architectural masterpieces using outdated 20th-century waterproofing specifications," Parikh warned. He pointed to India's 15-fold increase in extreme heatwaves and a 1.4-fold rise in intense rainfall events, calling for a complete shift towards climate-resilient engineering. He recommended multi-functional thermal insulation systems, over-deck spray polyurethane foam, and vegetative green roofs capable of withstanding roof surface temperatures of up to 65°C. Parikh also stated that traditional water ponding tests are no longer sufficient and called for rigorous scientific testing and shared accountability among manufacturers, contractors, and asset owners.

The conference featured technical sessions on sub-grade basement engineering, bottom-up and top-down confined wall systems, and chemical containment structures for public utilities such as sewage treatment plants (STPs) and desalination facilities. Specialised roundtable discussions, organised in collaboration with NAREDCO, examined the design, tendering, and supervision shortcomings that continue to contribute to widespread waterproofing failures.
