Infra Projects Record Rs 4.93 Lakh Cr Cost Overrun as Revised Cost Hits Rs 40.54 Lakh Cr: MoSPI
The government's PAIMANA platform is monitoring 1,847 projects across 17 Central Ministries and Departments, with a combined original cost of Rs 35.62 lakh crore and revised cost of Rs 40.54 lakh crore. This translates into an overall increase of about 13.8% over the original project cost. The report, however, did not specify how many individual projects were facing cost overruns.
Cumulative expenditure on the monitored projects reached Rs 21.97 lakh crore, equivalent to 54.18% of their revised cost. Of the total, 709 projects, or around 39%, had achieved more than 80% physical progress, while 337 projects had crossed 80% financial completion.
Transport and logistics dominated the project pipeline with 1,341 projects and a revised cost of Rs 22.32 lakh crore. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways accounted for the largest number, with 1,022 projects worth a revised Rs 9.89 lakh crore, followed by the Ministry of Railways with 255 projects worth Rs 8.69 lakh crore.
Of the 1,847 projects, 769 are mega projects costing Rs 1,000 crore and above, with an original cost of Rs 30.51 lakh crore, while 1,078 are major projects in the Rs 150-1,000 crore category.
During June 2026, major projects commissioned included the Rs 79,459-crore Rajasthan Refinery Project and the Rs 3,546.94-crore transmission system for the Kurnool Wind and Solar Energy Zone. Another 17 projects were added to PAIMANA monitoring during the month, including 14 road projects and three telecommunications projects.
