Injecting a major funding booster to the Udangudi Stage-I, 2x660 MW coal-based Supercritical Thermal Power Project in Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) has inked a pact with Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) recently, claimed official sources. They said adding that the loan will improve the power infrastructure of the State utilities and their financial and operational performance. The contract has been awarded to BHEL for the power plant worth Rs.7,300-crore and work on land preparation has already been started and the project has to be commissioned in 36 months. Environmental Clearance (EC) for the originally envisaged capacity of 2x800 MW was issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forest in the recent past.
