The Indian Railways has plans to expand railway connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh and build the proposed railway lines including Bhalukpong-Tenga-Tawang (378 km), North Lakhimpur-Bame-Aalo-Silapathar (247.85 km), and Pasighat-Tezu-Parsuram Kund-Rupai (227 km) to strengthen connectivity in the northern and eastern frontiers of the state. The projects have been put on fast track when the Union Minister of State for Railways met a team of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) along with state CM Prema Khandu to review the current status of rail lines, said official sources. The NFR is taking up the Bhalukpung-Tenga-Tawang railway line on a priority basis due to its strategic importance. The railway tracks will have to be built at a height of 10,000 sq ft and around 80 percent of the railway line will pass through tunnels. The railways, in an effort to reduce the distance, have suggested two-lane roads along the tunnels to be built on the line. Once the ongoing survey is completed and formalities are cleared, it will take around six to seven years for the Bhalukpong-Tenga-Tawang line to be up and ready. The line will prove to be useful from a security point of view besides accelerating socio-economic development in the region. Tawang, which has become a popular tourist spot, is located at an elevation of 10,000 sq ft to the east of Bhutan and Bumla Pass, located around 37 km from Tawang across the India-China border.
