PM launches ₹982-cr highway project in Tripura

Highway Projects
The Prime Minister has laid the foundation stone for the construction of NH-208 starting from Kailasahar to Khowai with a length of 80-km at ₹982 crore in Tripura. The project is being executed by the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) with financial support from the Japan Government. Once commissioned, the travelling time between Kaliashar and Khowai will be curtailed from 3 hours 40 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is supporting the improvement and construction of prioritized national highways with a length of 523-km through the North East Connectivity Improvement Projects (Phase1 - Phase 3). Phase 1 project is currently under implementation to improve and build NH51 from Tura to Daru (51.5km) in Meghalaya and NH54 from Aizawl to Tuipang (350.7km) in Mizoram.

Phase 2 Project is to improve and construct NH40 in Meghalaya and NH54 bypasses in Mizoram. NH40 from Shillong to Dawki (81km) and new 5 by-passes sections (21.4km) are under construction. Chief Representative of JICA India, Katsuo Matsumoto, said that this road construction is expected to strengthen not only regional connectivity within North-East states but also cross border connectivity between India and Bangladesh while bringing about big socio and economic impacts in facilitating the movement of people and the flow of goods.
