The Lok Sabha has approved SEZ amendment bill that seeks to allow trusts to set up units in special economic zones. Introducing the bill, the Commerce and Industry minister said that SEZs play an important role in promoting exports and economic growth in the country. The government had set up GIFT city in Gujarat and has planned similar cities in other parts of the country. The SEZs (Amendment) Bill, 2019 became the first legislation to be passed by the newly-constituted Lok Sabha replacing the SEZs (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019, which was promulgated in March this year.
