Nitin Gadkari Updates on National Highways Maintenance Efforts

In a Rajya Sabha update, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari detailed the Ministry's extensive work on National Highways (NHs). The Ministry oversees continuous upkeep, including assessment, rectification, and improvement of road conditions.
A robust Maintenance and Repair (M&R) system is in place. For sections under development or managed by Operation, Maintenance, and Transfer (OMT) Concessions or Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Contracts, the responsibility lies with Concessionaires or Contractors until the Defect Liability Period (DLP) ends. Other sections are covered by Performance Based Maintenance Contracts (PBMC) or Short Term Maintenance Contracts (STMC), ensuring all NH sections are under maintenance contracts.
The Ministry partners with agencies like the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and state-level Public Works Departments (PWDs) and Road Construction Departments (RCDs) to maintain NHs in optimal condition by addressing deficiencies and enhancing infrastructure.
