Airport Project
In a significant move towards the construction of the second airport in the city, the Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (NMIAL), the special purpose entity formed by GVK and CIDCO, invited expression of interest (EoI) for engineering, procurement and construction work from developers for the ₹16,000 crore projects. Among the work to be carried out for the airport project is construction of terminal building and airfield which includes runway, taxiway network, apron, airside infrastructure and also landside infrastructure like ancillary buildings, multi level car parking, roadway network and so on. In the initial plan, the terminal building was planned for an annual passenger handling capacity of 10 million but given the delay, the first phase will now have a terminal building with 20 million passengers handling capacity. The Mumbai airport, which operates out of a single runway, handled 48.50 million passengers in 2017-18 and is the second the busiest airport in the country.
