The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) in a recent revelation has claimed enjoying portfolio of highway projects of Rs. 1 lakh-cr in just two years of its existence and the achievements have left its peers in the private sector way behind. The mega border road building agency became functional in January 2015 to expedite construction of national highways and other infrastructure in the north-eastern region and other strategic areas. Currently, Reliance Infrastructure is executing projects of Rs. 6,983cr, totaling a length of 451 km. Ashok Buildcon, another infrastructure company, is currently implementing projects of Rs. 3,372cr. NHIDCL is currently executing 134 highway projects with a length of 8,000 km mainly in the seven north-eastern states where it routinely grapples with law and order and land acquisition issues, Managing Director, Anand Kumar said, adding that the company aims at becoming a game changer in the road sector, as it is using latest technology including soil stabilization and slope protection for construction of roads with reduced timelines.
