The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDC) has recently finalized the detailed project report for the improvement of NH-40 between Shillong and Dawki NH and also the construction of Dawki bridge under JICA funding. The status report for the project entailing an investment of Rs.1,330 crore, has already been submitted. The 71.2-km road project is to be taken up at a fast tracked basis and it will take two and a half years to be complete after the issuing of tender as it also includes a 368-m long and 12.5-m wide bridge in Dawki. Apart from providing better connectivity to Dawki, the road will be beneficial for trade and commerce with neighboring Bangladesh. It proposes to build a four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Mylliem and a two-lane road connecting Dawki and Tamabil by M/s Transys Consulting, which is the contractor for the project. Similarly, another project of Tura-Dalu including Tura bypass under JICA funding is in full swing as the recent NHIDCL report said that bid document for civil work is underway and M/s BPC Consultants has also finalized the additional survey work at the site. In addition to this, the road building agency is also speeding up 51.5-km road project at an investment of Rs.519.95-crore, including land acquisition in the area.
