Injecting a major booster to the country’s irrigation sector, NHAI has decided to build check dams along with bridges across Maharashtra, said Transport Minister, Nitin Gadkari, that hundred of such structures will be built including 35 in Vidarbha to irrigate between 40,000 to 50,000 hectares. In addition, NHAI would also de-silt dams, a pilot project, which has been launched in Buldhana district of the state. As NHAI contractors need earth for road works they will take away the silt and the effective storage of the water bodies will increase. The minister said that river-linking projects would also be taken up in the state on war footing to exploit rainwater of Konkan region that goes down into the sea. In the process NHAI will build five to six dams in the region and transport the water to parched Marathwada region and will also link Narmada river with Tapi. Elsewhere in the country, he said that water of Himalayan rivers was not being used fully and his ministry has decided to build three dams in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, thereby, doubling the quantum of water in Yamuna river to provide adequate water to Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. These apart, the government will also build Pancheshwar project on Indo-Nepal border to bring more water into Yamuna and also generate 6,000 MW hydro power, he claimed.
