NHAI fixes ₹3 trillion roads & highways on radar

National Highways Authority of India
In a strategic move, NHAI has decided to consider only those projects that require minimal land acquisition. This is due to the increased compensation costs after the new Act — the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 (LARR) came into being in January 2014. NHAI has finalized highway contracts worth ₹3 trillion under the Bharatmala scheme. Earlier, freight movement and revenue from projects were given precedence over land acquisition. This essentially means that existing projects that need expansion may get priority over newer ones. This will help in getting a better funding option as only those projects that have financial viability will be considered. NHAI officials said that these projects were part of the broader Bharatmala scheme.
