LMRC marches ahead with ₹8,415-cr Agra metro rail project
Expanding the metro rail network across cities, the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is set to start construction of the Agra metro rail project involving an investment of ₹8,415 crore. It will provide respite from traffic congestion not only to the residents but also the two crore tourists visiting the historic city every year. In March this year, the Union Cabinet approved the Agra Metro Rail Project, which is expected to be completed in the next 5 years. The project comprises two corridors which would pass through the heart of the city, connecting tourist spots like the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Sikandra as well as important places like the ISBT, Raja Ki Mandi railway station, medical college, Agra Cantt railway station and the Collectors offices. While Corridor 1 of 14 km would run from Sikandra to Taj East Gate, Corridor 2 of 15.4 km would extend from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar with 6 elevated and 7 underground stations. Corridor 2 would be completely elevated with 14 stations, said MD of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation, Kumar Keshav. LMRC is the implementing agency for the Agra Metro Project. The Union and state governments would each pitch in 20% equity, amounting to ₹1466.26 crore and the rest would be raised through bilateral or multilateral institutional loans.
