The National Highways Authority of India is set to start construction work on Phase II of the mega Ring Road project in Lucknow, for which strategies have been finalized with the divisional commissioners and district magistrates. Also, physical possession of 60% land acquired has been taken and the compensation process will begin very shortly. The foundation stone of the project was laid by President Ram Nath Kovind in March 2018, but protests by land owners delayed groundwork and it was decided to halt the process of physical possession till polling ended. NHAI project director in Varanasi, SB Singh, informed that the Phase II would be completed in two packages. In the first, a 17-km road will be constructed to connect Harahua (Varanasi-Lucknow NH-56) with Mohansarai (Kolkata-Howrah NH-2). In the second package, the Varanasi-Ghazipur stretch of NH-29 will be connected with NH-2 in Chandauli district. A major bridge over river Ganga has been proposed in this phase. Physical possession of land acquired for this package had been completed and the entire project is slated to be commissioned in 30 months.
