Govt goes for Metrolite in Tier-II, Tier III cities
In order to provide hassle-free mass transport system in tier-II and tier-III cities, the government has decided to build LRT-Metrolite, touted as the dedicated rail corridors with tracks on surfaces similar to railways instead of elevated or underground as in Metro rail corridors. Urban Affairs secretary D S Mishra said that the cost of Metrolite corridors would be 40% less than Metro rail lines, which will make them financially viable. The ministry has prepared the blueprint and finalized the standards and specifications for Metrolite and sent them to the railway ministry. Since there won't be enough ridership in these cities, Metrolite network will be suitable at much less cost and will also act as a feeder service from various parts of the city. Currently, 657 km of Metro rail network is operational across cities and another 800 km is under construction in 27 cities. According to some sources, some Metro networks such as in Nagpur, Kochi and Jaipur, are not getting good ridership; the Kochi Metro is incurring an estimated annual loss of around ₹25 crores. Hence, the state governments are looking for more viable options.
