NHAI eyes ₹62,000 cr highway financing via bonds route
Ensuring smooth flow of funds for its much hyped Bharatmala programs, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to generate about ₹62,000 crore, the target it has set for itself for the current fiscal for financing highway projects. It may be recalled that NHAI raised about ₹52,000 crore during 2017-18 as the apex authority has been authorized issuing bonds, including masala bonds (on international stock exchanges), under section 54EC of Income Tax Act. Centre had launched its flagship program, Bharatmala, last year, after it received the cabinet committee's approval. The program envisages developing close to 60,000 km of new national highways with a capital outlay of ₹6.92 lakh-crore. The first phase is already underway which will see construction of 34,800 km of national highways at ₹5.35 lakh-crore, Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari said.
