Building word-class road infra in the region, the state government in Meghalaya has moved ahead for the construction of two more national highways including Mawngap-Ranikor road passing through East and South West Khasi Hills and the other two-lane Nongstoin-Wahkaji road that will also connect Baghmara. NHAI has cleared the projects and construction work will be taken up shortly by NHAI. Deputy CM, Prestone Tynsong said that transport minister Nitin Gadkari has given in-principle approval for Mawngap Mawphlang-Weiloi-Mawkyrwat (road) up to Ranikor as a double lane highway stretch. Another Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) project is the Nongstoin-Wahkaji road to be connected to Nongjri, Maheshkola and Baghmara, the headquarters of South Garo Hills. The proposed widening and declaration of the road segments as national highways will result in economic development of the entire area. Construction work is set to start soon and the state government has sought NOC from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council for fast tracking the projects.
