NHAI and IIIT Delhi Collaborate to Enhance Road Safety with AI

The National Highways Authority of India
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi to improve road safety on national highways using Artificial Intelligence (AI) based solutions.

Under this agreement, IIIT Delhi will survey and collect imagery and data on the availability and condition of road signs on approximately 25,000 km of selected national highways. This data will be processed using AI to accurately identify and classify road signs. The resulting survey report will include a geo-stamped inventory of existing road signs, their structural condition, and other relevant data.

Additionally, IIIT Delhi will conduct a gap study to compare survey findings with the requirements specified in the approved road signage plans and latest codal provisions for high-speed corridors, addressing enhanced safety needs.

By leveraging AI and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), NHAI aims to enhance road safety for all national highway users through innovative and advanced technologies.
