In order to build durable and long lasting roads in the country, the Road ministry has decided to implement a 'Value Engineering Program' to promote new technologies, material and equipment in the highway projects executed either under PPP or public funding model, official sources said that the program aims at reducing cost of projects, scheduled completion and to make them more environment-friendly. Simultaneously it will also ensure that the roads or bridges and other assets get constructed much faster, and are structurally stronger as well as more durable. The program is expected to increase the speed of construction, reduce construction cost, increase asset durability and improve aesthetics and safety. In this connection, the ministry has also reconstituted a nine-member experts' panel for approving proposals for use of new technologies, material and equipment. The panel is chaired by SR Tambe, former Secretary, PWD, Maharashtra, and co-chaired by Prof Ravi Sinha, IIT Mumbai.
