The road transport and highways ministry has given its in-principle approval for the 340 km long four-lane access-controlled highway, Regional Ring Road (RRR), around Hyderabad city connecting almost 20 developing towns. The overall cost of the project is expected to be ₹16,000 crore. Union transport minister said that this will be the longest bypass in India and the ministry has assured that the road will be built in three years once the land acquisition process is completed. The ministry has urged the state government to take proactive steps to fast-track it for the development of Telangana.

The RRR would have northern and southern arms, and the Centre has already approved the northern stretch of the project. It would cover Sangarreddy, Narasapur, Toopran, Gajwel, Jagdevpur Bhongir, and end at Coutuppal on NH-65. Covering from Sanga Reddy to Yadadri up to Choutuppal, it will be developed as the new national highway 161AA. The tentative construction cost will be ₹7,561 crore, and ₹1,961 crore would be required for land acquisition, making the total cost of the project to be ₹9,522 crore.

The ministry is all set to approve the second arm of the RRR (182 km) covering the southern part connecting Choutuppal, Ibrahimpatnam, Kandukur, Amangal, Chevella, Shankarpally and Sangareddy. The total cost of the southern arm is expected to be about ₹6,481 crore.

Once the RRR is operational, highway traffic heading towards Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bengaluru and Delhi will be diverted onto this access-controlled road and hence will reduce congestion and pollution in Hyderabad and Cyberabad.
