As many as 31 companies have qualified for the final stage of bidding for the 22 km long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) project to be built over the Thane creek and will be the country's longest sea bridge project entailing an investment of Rs.17,750cr. The infra building majors including engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and China Railway Construction Bridge Engineering Bureau Group, are among others evincing keen interest in building the mega project. Of the 22 km stretch, 16.5 km will be over the sea and the land for the project has already been handed over to MMRDA on the south side of the project by the Mumbai Port Trust. The MTHL project, which was first conceived in 2004, has seen its cost escalation from about Rs. 4,500-cr in 2005 to Rs. 17,500cr. Approximately 80% of the project is being funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency and the rest will be funded by MMRDA and the project has been divided into three packages and 17 companies are being evaluated for the first package of the project.
