Srinagar–Katra Vande Bharat Extended to Jammu Tawi, Boosting J&K Rail Connectivity

The service, earlier operating between Srinagar and Katra, will now connect directly to Jammu Tawi, a key rail hub with links to major cities such as Kanyakumari, Mumbai and Howrah. The minister said the train has been running at full occupancy, underlining its growing importance for regional mobility and tourism. A 20-coach Vande Bharat has also been introduced on the route to enhance capacity.
Vaishnaw noted that the development builds on the Jammu–Srinagar rail link inaugurated by Narendra Modi in June last year, further strengthening all-weather connectivity in the region. The train is designed for operations in extreme climatic conditions, including sub-zero temperatures, and features advanced electronics and semiconductor-based systems.
Efforts have also been made to enhance passenger experience with regional integration, including Dogri cuisine onboard. Meanwhile, redevelopment of Jammu Tawi station is underway, with platform expansion, new entry points and upgraded passenger amenities.
On the infrastructure front, the minister said doubling of the Jalandhar–Jammu section has been completed, while the Delhi–Ambala corridor is being upgraded to four lines. Work is also underway on doubling the Qazigund–Baramulla line, with projects such as the Poonch–Rajouri rail link and Uri–Baramulla extension in planning stages.
These initiatives are expected to improve capacity, reduce travel time, ease congestion and reduce dependence on road transport, while boosting tourism, trade and economic development across Jammu and Kashmir.
