Railways Launches Daily CSMT-Sawantwadi Train to Strengthen Mumbai-Konkan Connectivity
The new service will cover around 510 km and connect Mumbai with major towns across the Konkan region, benefiting passengers travelling to and from Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
The train will operate as Train No. 15087 CSMT-Sawantwadi Road Express and Train No. 15088 Sawantwadi Road-CSMT Express. It will depart CSMT at 23:55 hrs and reach Sawantwadi Road at 14:15 hrs the following day. On the return journey, it will leave Sawantwadi Road at 17:20 hrs and arrive at CSMT at 06:40 hrs the next morning.
The service will stop at Dadar, Thane, Panvel, Pen, Roha, Mangaon, Veer, Khed, Chiplun, Savarda, Aravali Road, Sangameshwar Road, Ratnagiri, Adavali, Vilavade, Rajapur Road, Vaibhavwadi Road, Nandgaon, Kankavli, Sindhudurg, Kudal and Sawantwadi Road.
The extensive stoppage pattern is expected to improve access to several towns and localities across the Konkan belt. The service is also expected to support tourism and facilitate the movement of students, employees, traders and families between Mumbai and the region.
Vaishnaw said the new service addresses a long-standing demand from people in Mumbai and Konkan. He also said 350 special trains are being operated this year to facilitate passenger movement during the festival season, with the number capable of being increased to 370 if required.
Goyal said the new service would strengthen economic linkages between Mumbai and Konkan. Improved connectivity could also help local producers, including fishermen, transport goods to Mumbai more quickly and provide better access to employment, education and healthcare opportunities.
Shinde described the service as a major boost for people travelling to Konkan during Ganesh Utsav. He also highlighted the completion of electrification of the 741-km Konkan Railway route, which has enabled more environment-friendly train operations and higher speeds.
The Railways is also undertaking several capacity enhancement projects on the Mumbai suburban network. Vaishnaw said projects worth around Rs 18,000 crore are currently underway in Mumbai, including the extension of platforms to accommodate 15-coach trains and modernisation of signalling systems.
The Railways has sanctioned 238 new AC local train rakes for Mumbai, with delivery of the first rake expected to begin in 2027.
Vaishnaw also said the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors are now fully complete. He referred to the proposed East-West Dedicated Freight Corridor from Dankuni to Surat, which is being designed to connect parts of Vidarbha, Marathwada and Western Maharashtra, as well as Wardha and the port at Nashik.
Work is also progressing on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, including the undersea rail tunnel connecting BKC and Thane. Two tunnel boring machines, from Vikhroli and Ghansoli, are currently working on the tunnel.
