Next-Generation Fleet and Strategic Expansion Cleared for Kolkata Metro
Beyond rolling stock procurement, the network is aggressively planning physical expansions to meet growing commuter volumes. Field surveys have officially commenced for the proposed Chitpur–Karunamoyee alignment. This critical line is being engineered to establish a direct rapid transit link between Kolkata Railway Station (a major long-distance hub) and Salt Lake, the city's premier information technology and commercial district.
Concurrently, West Bengal’s urban transit ecosystem is diversifying. Parallel to the metro expansions, the state is preparing project proposals under the central government's Sagarmala 2 framework, which includes integrating Kolkata into a broader water-based urban transport network. The upcoming deployments are expected to significantly de-congest major road corridors by shifting daily commuters to integrated rail and water transit systems.
