HCC in JV launches 11.6-km long elevated metro corridor
The metro contractors in Tamil Nadu have launched the construction of the 11.6km long elevated metro corridor between Puzhuthivakkam and Sholinganallur where the project has been awarded to a joint venture of Hindustan Construction Company-KEC International. The project aims at connecting localities such as Madipakkam, Kovilambakkam, Medavakkam and Perumbakkam. It is a part of the 47km corridor between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. The 118.9km three-corridor phase-2 is expected to be completed by 2025. The contractors have recently started piling work at Kovilambakkam where the work involves laying the foundation to build pillars that will support the elevated viaduct. Apart from the construction of the elevated line, 11 elevated stations will also be built on the stretch. The stations will come up at Madipakkam, Kilkattalai, Echangadu, Kovilambakkam, Vellakkal, Medavakkam Koot Road, Kamaraj Garden Street, Medavakkam junction, Perumbakkam, Global Hospital and Elcot. The construction for the stretch carries a 36-month deadline. On commissioning, residents in the southern suburban localities will be able to reach the airport, CMBT, Central or Egmore via Alandur metro, which will serve as a metro hub that links phase-1 and 2 corridors. The residents will also be able to reach other localities like T Nagar, Kodambakkam and the Lighthouse at Marina Beach by switching corridors at Porur junction.
