In its quest to provide hassle-free road transport facilities to the milling masses of the metropolitan city, the state government of Maharashtra has decided to build coastal road along the city's western fringes connecting south Mumbai and Malad at an investment of Rs. 12,000cr. The mega project, which is being positioned as a project that could change the way Mumbai commutes, is a bit controversial as it requires reclamation of land from the sea and mangroves. In this connection, CM, Devendra Fadnavis recently met the Union Minister of Environment and Forest (MoEF) and demanded permissions for the coastal road and a sewage treatment plant at Malad. Coastal road, the ambitious project, which the government aims to inaugurate before the code of conduct for the civic elections set in, is awaiting environment clearance from the Union ministry. It has been decided that officials from MCZMA and those from the Union Government will sit together to hammer out a speedy clearance of the concerns to expedite the mega road project, claimed official sources.
