The Ministry of Environment & Forests has granted Environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearances to the Kochi Water Metro Project with certain riders; the executing agency will strictly adhere to the compliance report submitted by Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL). Managing director of KMRL, Alkesh Kumar Sharma, reiterated that they were committed to protecting the environment and all the construction activities will be carried out as per the laid down norms. The Centre has asked KMRL not to block creeks or rivers and ensure smooth flow of water in the project area. The authorities have been instructed to devise a disaster management plan and frame safety guidelines. KMRL has already awarded the tender for construction of boats to Cochin Shipyard Limited for 15 different routes and 38 stations covering a length of 78 km in the Kochi backwaters with an outlay worth ₹747.28 crore.
