Karnataka launches ₹220-cr airport at Vijayapura

The Karnataka Government has started the construction work for the airport project at Vijayapura, entailing an investment of ₹220 crore. The state CM has laid the foundation stone on an area of 727 acres. The airport is being built in a phased manner whereby the first phase involves an investment of ₹95 crore and the second one will entail ₹125 crore. The airport will help in the export of fruits and other horticultural products, besides boosting tourism potentials of the region. The State Infrastructure Development is carrying out the project with the Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) serving as the nodal agency for the project and the State Public Works Department will be involved in the construction work under the supervision of the Airport Authority of India. The first phase has been given a deadline of 18 months for the construction of runway, airport terminal building, taxiway and apron. Operations with ATR-72 type aircraft with a seating capacity of 70 passengers can begin after the commissioning of the aviation facility.
