IWAI Prioritizes Sustainability & Expansion of Inland Waterways in TN

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) ensures environmental compliance before initiating any development projects by conducting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) studies. These assessments align with guidelines from the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, focusing on safeguarding aquatic ecosystems. All necessary approvals are secured prior to execution.
IWAI is set to collaborate with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore cruise tourism opportunities in the state's inland waterways. Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) are prepared for proposed projects, highlighting economic benefits for surrounding regions and adhering to DPR recommendations.
Inland Water Transport (IWT) is a cost-effective alternative to road and rail transport, offering reduced logistics expenses. Successful examples of industrialization along rivers such as Tapi (NW-100), Amba (NW-10), and Jaigad Creek-Shastri River (NW-91) illustrate its potential, collectively facilitating the movement of approximately 98.67 MMT of cargo annually.
