Haryana and HP consider dam construction behind Hathnikund Barrage

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has revealed that the state governments of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are actively exploring the possibility of constructing a dam behind the Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district. The proposal aims to address concerns raised about excess water release from the barrage, which recently drew attention when Delhi's Chief Minister alleged its involvement in flooding Delhi.

In response to the flooding accusations, Haryana refuted the claims, asserting that the Hathnikund Barrage is not a dam but merely a barrage that cannot retain excessive water from heavy rainfall in the hilly state. As part of the efforts to strengthen relations and extend support, Chief Minister Khattar has announced a contribution of Rs 5 crore to the Himachal CM Relief Fund.

Furthermore, CM Khattar highlighted the potential benefits of legal mining in riverbeds, explaining that it could increase water intake capacity by removing excess silt buildup, ultimately aiding in flood prevention in low-lying areas. The recent rainfall statistics in Haryana showed a significant excess of 287 per cent from July 8 to 12, resulting in over Rs 500 crore worth of flood-related losses. To support affected farmers, the government has provisioned Rs 15,000 per acre for those who experienced a 100 per cent loss.
