Great Nicobar Project to Develop Strategic Transshipment Port And Airport Hub

Great-Nicobar-Port
The Great Nicobar Project aims to transform Great Nicobar into a strategic maritime and economic hub with key infrastructure including a 14.2 million TEU international container transshipment terminal, a greenfield international airport, a 450 MVA power plant and a planned township.

The project, located close to the East–West international shipping route, is designed to reduce India’s dependence on foreign transshipment hubs such as Colombo and Singapore, while strengthening logistics efficiency, trade capacity and national security in the Indo-Pacific region.

The transshipment terminal at Galathea Bay will leverage natural deep-draft conditions to handle large vessels, while the new airport is expected to significantly improve connectivity and support tourism and economic activity. The integrated township and power infrastructure will support long-term industrial and urban development on the island.

Planned in three phases up to 2047, the project covers around 166 sq km and is being implemented under a regulated environmental framework with statutory clearances, monitoring mechanisms and mitigation measures in place.
