India targets $60-bn gas distribution infrastructure
India has decided to invest over $60 billion in developing natural gas supply and distribution infrastructure across the country as it plans to more than double the share of natural gas in its energy base to 15 per cent by 2030. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that natural gas currently constitutes 6.2 percent of all energy consumption in the country and now the government has laid emphasis on developing a gas-based economy. Natural gas is gradually becoming a fuel for a low carbon economy in India The targeted spending is currently underway in building a gas pipeline and terminal infrastructure which are in advanced stages of completion. City gas distribution network will soon cover 70 percent of India's population. The government is exploring strategic partnerships for overall development of the country's oil & gas sector and is also considering the role of the private sector - both domestic and overseas - for bringing in investment and innovations in the sector.
