In order to give 44 km of seamless travel experience to motorists on the highway towards Gandhinagar, the current four-lane road from Sarkhej (Sanand crossroads) to Chiloda circle will be converted into six-lane with an investment of Rs 750 crore, said official sources. In the ongoing exercise, the road will see a further widening of 35 metres, according to forest officials. Ruling out transplantation‘ of these 5,000 odd trees reared by the forest department, the R& D department has plans to plant almost similar number of trees in 3 rows on the Infocity to Vaishnodevi stretch and will also landscape patches of 15 metres. However, PR Patelia, chief engineer (NH) & additional secretary (R&B Department), said that the move is also facilitating commuters and aiding their safety and not just a tree-cutting exercise, which will be compensated by planting new trees.
