Strictly adhering to its commitment to provide uninterrupted connectivity to smaller cities, The Union Government is all set to start building new airports and upgrading the existing ones and that the task will be completed in the next one year. In fact, under a government plan to service smaller cities that have missed out on the country's air travel radar, PM is taking personal interest to accelerate growth in the world's fastest expanding Indian aviation market, while encouraging airlines like IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Jet Airways to fly more people from smaller cities. On this score, civil aviation ministry has identified 30 locations recently for building new airports, and another 60 airports are nearing completion and will resume flights very shortly. Only last month, the government approved a policy to cap air fares on services to smaller cities at Rs.2,500($37) per hour of travel, with the government providing part of the funding to make it viable and that funding for the scheme would be set at around Rs.5 billion per annum, with states pitching in upto 20% of the money, or 10% in the case of the remote region of northeast.
