Delhi Govt Unveils ₹1,500 Cr Plan to Clean Yamuna, Upgrade Sewage System

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a ₹1,500 crore initiative to clean the Yamuna River and improve the city's sewage infrastructure. The plan includes 40 new decentralised sewage treatment plants (STPs), modernisation of existing STPs, and advanced pollution-control machinery.
To curb untreated sewage flow into the Yamuna, ₹500 crore will be spent on setting up 40 decentralised STPs, ensuring wastewater is treated before entering major drains. Another ₹500 crore is allocated to upgrade existing STPs to enhance capacity. “The Yamuna is not just a river; it is our cultural and historical heritage. Cleaning it remains a top priority,” Gupta stated in her Budget speech.
The government has allocated ₹500 crore for repairing and developing STPs, ₹250 crore for replacing old sewer lines, and ₹250 crore for improving water treatment plants. Additionally, ₹20 crore will be spent on sludge and blockage removal machines, while ₹10 crore is set aside for renovating the Wazirabad trunk sewer.
