In an attempt to provide speedier rail transport services across the country, the Union railway ministry has recently identified nine high-speed corridors to be upgraded with speed of 160 km to 200 km/hour entailing an estimated investment of Rs.10,000 crore each. It may be recalled that railway has in the recent past upgraded Delhi-Agra corridor to cater 160 km/hour rail traffic and is all set to upgrade Delhi-Chandigarh route with the help from France to reduce the travel time. The 245 km-long Delhi-Chandigarh corridor, one of the busiest routes in northern India, is slated to be first semi-high-speed project being taken up by railways to run train at maximum speed of 200 km/hour. Other corridors included Delhi-Kanpur, Nagpur-Bilaspur, Mysore-Bengaluru-Chennai, Mumbai-Goa, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, Chennai-Hyderabad and Nagpur- Secunderabad routes for raising the speeds of passenger trains to 160/200 km/h. According to an initial estimate, Delhi-Chandigarh corridor is likely to cost over Rs.10,000 crore with about Rs.46 crore/km construction cost, which includes rolling stock, signal and track upgrade on the corridor. Currently, Shatabdi Express covers the 245 km distance in about 3 hours 30 minutes travelling at a maximum speed of 110 km/hour, said official source.
