In a bid to provide uninterrupted road connectivity to states in the north eastern region of the country, the transport ministry has fast tracked 300 km long four lanes Aizawl-Tuipang highway project at an investment of Rs. 6,000 crore, said official sources claiming that the project in question, has been lauded as one of the most challenging road projects taken up in this part of the country, in decades. After commissioning, the highway will ensure faster movement of goods between Sittwe and Mizo capital of Aizawl in the North West areas of the region which is very close to the Barak Valley of Assam. The Indian government is also contemplating building road link between Paletwa and Zorinpui to make the most out of such huge investments on either side of the border between India and Myanmar. In addition, the ministry has also awarded the much delayed 109 km long Mizoram-Myanmar Kalanand highway project at an investment of Rs. 1,600 crore. These apart, the governments of both these countries have also agreed to set up an SEZ at Sittwe in Myanmar, which is located closer to the Chinese port and SEZ at Kyaukphyu and suitable land has also been identified in Sittwe to promote Indian investment in the region.
