J&K Chief Secretary BVR Subrahmanyam informed that to connect tourist spots and strengthen surveillance across the border in the Kashmir Valley, the Union government has decided to build a 600 km-long highway connecting Gulmarg with Kargil and Drass in Ladakh regions. It will connect Keran, Gurej and Machhal and will cost ₹8,000 crore. There will be 12-13 major tunnels along the road and it will facilitate connectivity to the forward locations. Keran and Machhal are located along the Line of Control in Kupwara district, Gurez is a valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains in Bandipora district. Kargil and Drass fall under the Union Territory of Ladakh. Gulmarg, located about 50 km from Srinagar, is a major tourist attraction in the country with its snow-clad mountains, beauty and winter game facilities.
