Govt. clears Rs.19,300 cr airport projects

In yet another boost to the aviation sector, the Environment ministry has recently given green clearance to various airport projects entailing an investment of Rs.19,300 crore including in remote cities like Agartala and Raipur. The decision is in line with the government‘s focus on improving regional air connectivity across the country. The airport projects include construction of a new integrated terminal building, link taxiway at the existing airports and building new airport with top-class infrastructure at new places. The proposed domestic terminal building area has been designed for 600 arriving and 600 departing passengers including 100 international passengers, at a time. The estimated construction cost of the Agartala airport is Rs.427.82 crore. The expert panel also gave the go-ahead to a project related to the extension of runway and expansion of among other things at Swami Vivekananda Airport in Raipur. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.103.5 crore.

Prior to this, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved the expansion and upgradation of Tirupati and Kadapa airports in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalseema region. The airport in the temple town of Tirupati will be upgraded at an estimated cost of Rs.177.10 crore. AAI has entered into MoU with the Andhra Pradesh government for improving this airport and will be spending an amount of Rs.94.44 crore. Another airport at Gannavaram near Vijayawada, too, was given international status recently. The project will include the strengthening of existing runway to make it capable of handling wide-body aircraft for international operations, Another project that received the panel‘s nod at a recent decision was the expansion of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi involving a whopping investment worth Rs.16,000 crore.
