A staggering investment worth ₹6.16 lakh crore has been approved to date under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) as compared to the committed central assistance of ₹1.65 lakh crore, Union Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, elaborating that PMAY(U) seeks to provide all weather pucca houses to beneficiaries in economically weaker sections in urban areas but at the same time there are no data available with the ministry about home-less people in the country and that along with this, poverty alleviation is also a focus area. Housing sector contributes significantly to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with direct impact on job generation, he claimed.
