Exploring The Green: Herrenknecht at bauma 2025

Underground infrastructure is crucial for future-proof traffic development as well as for efficient supply and disposal networks. As the world's leading full-range supplier, Herrenknecht AG develops and supplies mechanized tunneling technology that has been driving successful tunneling projects for nearly 50 years. At bauma, the world's leading trade show for construction machinery, from April 7 to 13, 2025, in Munich, Herrenknecht will present, under the motto "Exploring the Green," pioneering solutions and comprehensive services that pave the tunneling industry's path to greater sustainability and efficiency.
On over 800 square meters of exhibition space, visitors can experience new digital applications and innovative high-tech engineering, as well as exciting examples of hands-on services.
Whether it's traffic relief in urban centers, efficient cross-regional rail connections, sustainable energy supply, or efficient water and sewage systems, the future of sustainable infrastructure lies underground and plays a decisive role in overcoming global challenges. Projects such as the Grand Paris Express and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore are bringing millions of people in the world's metropolises closer together. These projects create efficient, reliable transport arteries that not only make everyday life easier but also promote economic development.

At the same time, megaprojects in the Alps are overcoming enormous geographical obstacles. Transalpine routes, including the Gotthard Tunnel and the Brenner and Mont Cenis base tunnels between Lyon and Turin (TELT), significantly reduce journey times, making freight and passenger transport more efficient and environmentally friendly.
However, infrastructure is not just about mobility—the energy supply of the future also lies deep underground. Geothermal drilling is unlocking untapped potential for sustainable heat and power generation.
At bauma 2025, on an exhibition space of over 800 square meters, Herrenknecht AG will showcase the latest developments in mechanized tunneling technology, along with global project references. Five key thematic areas at the presentation (Hall C3, Booths 447 and 547) will highlight forward-looking trends, such as digitalization, automation in tunneling, and solutions for the sustainable use of resources.
Additionally, Herrenknecht Group specialists will present their solutions for the upstream and downstream processes of tunnel jobsites—from robot-supported segment production and smart transport vehicles to precise navigation systems and efficient muck management.
Exploring the Green
A more sustainable use of resources is a cornerstone of the future viability of mechanized tunneling, alongside increasing efficiency and occupational safety. Given the diverse and complex challenges of underground construction, solutions must be just as multifaceted. These range from automated directional control of gantry carriages to comprehensive engineering guidelines, ensuring that resource-saving rebuilding of components is planned well in advance during the early construction phase.
The characteristic green of the Herrenknecht brand represents a team of experienced specialists with a globally unique portfolio of expertise, offering customized solutions for every customer requirement.
The "Exploring the Green" motto at Herrenknecht's bauma presentation invites visitors, customers, and partners to explore innovative solutions across five thematic areas and engage with industry experts.
Utility Trends
Urbanization, climate change, and the energy transition are increasing demands for underground supply and disposal infrastructure. Herrenknecht is addressing these challenges with advanced technologies.
A notable example is the ElbX project, a crossing under the Elbe River for the Südlink Network Code on the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) line. A Mixshield, specifically designed for the project, is being used to handle the expected heterogeneous subsoil, high water permeability, and water pressure beneath the Elbe. Herrenknecht also offers solutions for crossings using horizontal directional drilling, sewage systems, and seawater desalination plants.
Technological Progress
Herrenknecht is driving automation in mechanized tunneling, making it safer and more efficient. At bauma, the company will showcase advancements in automated segment handling, ring building, and the directional control of tunnel boring machines (TBMs).
In the High Speed Two (HS2) project, Herrenknecht is setting new standards in safety and digitalization with 12 state-of-the-art machines and advanced automation solutions. The company, in collaboration with Bouygues Travaux Publics, developed the (semi-)continuous advance method used at HS2.
Green Tunneling
Herrenknecht adopts a holistic approach to sustainable tunneling, prioritizing energy efficiency and resource conservation—tailored to the specific needs of customers and projects. Targeted technological developments significantly reduce energy consumption, lubricant use, and water requirements, minimizing the ecological footprint of tunneling projects.
The reuse of professionally rebuilt components and machines reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 95%.
