Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) has secured a Rs 127 crore contract from Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL) for construction works associated with the Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in Bhutan.

The scope of work includes the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams. The project is scheduled for completion within nine months.

The diversion works are critical to enabling the early commencement of the project's main civil construction activities and maintaining the overall implementation schedule of the hydropower development.

The award follows WHPL's technical and financial evaluation process and further strengthens HCC's presence in Bhutan, where it has been active for more than three decades.

HCC has previously contributed to several major hydropower projects in Bhutan, including the 1,020 MW Tala Hydroelectric Project, 60 MW Kurichu, 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I, 114 MW Dagachhu and 118 MW Nikachhu projects.

The contract comes as Bhutan accelerates hydropower development under its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–29), which targets an installed hydropower capacity of 6,000 MW through continued investment in large hydroelectric projects. HCC noted that it has also participated in the development of around 26% of India's installed hydropower capacity.
