Delhi - Meerut Expressway becomes operational
The 82-km phase 2 and 4 of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway has opened for the public. The expressway will cut the travel time between the two cities from two hours to about 50 minutes. It is India's first 14-lane highway. The Delhi section was completed in a period of 18 months at ₹842 crore. The expressway is lit by solar power and consists of a 2.5-meter wide cycle track with a 2-meter wide footpath. It boasts of a hanging garden with drip irrigation on Yamuna bridges. There are five flyovers, four underpasses, and four foot-over bridges along the highway. Around 200 high-sensitivity cameras have been installed at regular intervals all over the stretch. They can capture the number plate from a distance of about half a kilometer.
