The state government of Punjab has approved ₹40 crore for construction of the Ferozepur-Amritsar direct rail link for which the land acquisition process in Ferozepur and Tarn Taran districts is being fast tracked. The rail line will shorten the distance between the northern states, including Punjab, to trade capitals of Gujarat and Maharastra. Vivek Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager - Ferozepur Division said that once the land was available, the Railways would start the work immediately. Though the crucial rail link was given a green signal in the 2013 rail budget, the matter remained hanging due to delay by the state government in providing land. Last year, CM Amarinder Singh had asked the Railway Ministry to expedite construction of the broad-gauge link between Gharyala on the Amritsar-Khemkaran line and Mallanwala on the Ferozepur-Jalandhar line. The rail link is extremely vital to join the two strategically located border districts and will be a boon for farmers to send vegetables and fruits to markets in Mumbai and Gujarat and other areas within two-three days.
