Decks have been cleared for the much delayed Joka-BBD Bag Metro project in West Bengal as the Railway Vikas Nigam, which is executing the project, has been able to secure approval from multiple agencies to execute the project at an investment of Rs.2,619 crore. In this connection, the contractor is all set to float the tender to build the mega project and the tender will be floated in the next six-seven days, Executive Director, RVNL, Rajesh Prasad said, adding that the construction of the depot is the most urgent as the rolling-stock could not be brought till the facility is ready. He added that it would take nearly three years to build the depot and yard with a complex rail-laying, as the car shed would have cross-over rail lines. The pace for the mega project picked up only after Mayor Sovan Chatterjee persuaded individual land owners to hand over their plots in exchange for compensation and the fresh financial sanction came shortly after they agreed to offer the land. The 7.5 km Joka – Majerhat elevated section is slated to be open up by 2019, but the primarily underground 8.25 km Majerhat – Esplanade section where bulk of the current spending involves would only be ready by 2022, said official sources.
