The Chennai Metro Rail has launched work on Phase-II of the tunnels under two water bodies, namely the Adyar river and the Chepet lake, and when these become operational, commuters will travel 20 meters under the depths of the Adyar river and Chepet lake between Madhavaram and Sholinganallur. Soil testing for the project is in full swing with samples being collected every 15-18 meters and 25-30 meters of drilling a 150mm borehole. While-the Adyar tunnel connects the Adyar junction station and Adyar depot station, tunnels under the Chetpet lake will connect KMC station on Barnaby road with the Chetpet station. These stations form the 45.8km corridor of the 118.9 km phase-II of the Madhavaram SIPCOT line and the tunnels are part of a priority corridor for which funding arrangements are in place and tendering is set to start shortly.
