CMRL launches ₹61,843-cr Phase-II of metro project

Union Home Minister has laid the foundation stone for the Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail project involving an investment of ₹61, 843 crore. The minister launched the project via videoconference from a hall in Anna Salai. The newest project will cover 118.9 km with three corridors —Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Madhavaram to Sholinganallur and Light House to Poonamallee. Apart from this, he also laid the foundation stones for a score of other infrastructure projects including the Coimbatore-Avinashi elevated expressway project, Indian Oil Corporation's petroleum terminal at Vallur and Lube Plant at Amullaivoyal thereby taking the total amount of investment in infra project to ₹67,000 crore. He also inaugurated ₹380 crore Thervoy Kandigai reservoir in Tiruvallur district where it is meant to meet Chennai's additional requirement for drinking water. Spreading across 1,495 acres, it will serve as the fifth reservoir for the city and may help avert drought-like situation by facilitating the supply of 65 million litres a day (MLD) water to the city as the project has raised the combined storage of water in the lakes by 1,000 mcft.
