Centre injects ₹2,000-cr in Telangana's road network

In a major boost to the Telangana government‘s plans of improving rural road connectivity, the Centre has given an in principle approval worth ₹2,000 crore to fund the development of over 2,000 km of cumulated length of rural roads in the state under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) of Central government. Of the total sanctioned amount of the estimated cost for development of roads, 60% will be funded by the Central government and 40% to be borne by the state. These funds would be released in a phased manner to build road network in several tribal hamlets providing proper connectivity with the mandal and district headquarters. In a large number of cases, there is just a single-lane roads laid several years ago as the state has been developing single lane into two lanes. As part of improving connectivity from villages to mandal headquarters and from mandal to district headquarters, the government had sent a proposal to the Ministry of Rural Development. Over 16,800 km of single lane roads have already been identified of which 12,000-odd km cumulated length of roads have been taken up for development at a cost of over ₹13,000 crore.
