CAQM Strengthens Measures to Control C&D Dust Pollution
The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has approved stricter actions to tackle dust pollution from construction and demolition (C&D) activities in the National Capital Region (NCR). During a recent meeting, the enforcement status of inspections by Flying Squads and penalties imposed by State Pollution Control Boards (SPCBs) and DPCC were reviewed. These agencies were urged to enhance their efforts, particularly under the severe air quality measures of GRAP Stage IV.
To address persistent dust pollution, the Commission emphasized robust enforcement of C&D Waste Management Rules 2016 and other mitigation measures. Member-Secretaries of Pollution Control Boards in NCR states, along with the DPCC, have been authorized to prosecute violators, order site closures, and impose environmental compensation charges for non-compliance.
Monthly progress reports on these actions will be submitted to the Commission to ensure accountability. All implementing agencies pledged to intensify air pollution control measures and take effective action across sectors to mitigate pollution in the NCR.
