NHAI Boosts Road Safety Measures for Foggy Highways
To ensure road safety during winter fog, NHAI has directed field offices to implement proactive visibility and safety measures on National Highways.
Engineering solutions include reinstalling missing road signs, refreshing pavement markings, adding reflective markers and solar blinkers, and replacing damaged hazard signs. Special attention will be given to accident-prone zones with transverse bar markings and enhanced visibility features.
Safety awareness initiatives focus on alerting highway users to reduced visibility. Variable Message Signs (VMS) will display fog alerts and speed limits, while public announcements via electronic boards, radio, social media, and pamphlets at toll plazas will guide commuters. Reflective tapes will also be installed on vehicles for better visibility.
NHAI will conduct night inspections with teams comprising officials, engineers, and contractors to identify fog-prone areas needing improvements. Highway patrol vehicles will be stationed at critical spots, equipped with blinking batons to manage traffic during emergencies. Joint drills with traffic police and coordination with law enforcement and ambulance services are planned to address fog-related challenges effectively.
These measures aim to minimize risks and ensure safe travel during foggy conditions on National Highways.
